The Story of Irish Coffee

The history of Irish Coffee begins in the 1940s at Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum, then one of the world's busiest transatlantic aviation hubs.

On a cold winter evening in 1943, chef Joe Sheridan was asked to prepare refreshments for a group of passengers whose flight had been forced to return due to bad weather. To warm them up, he combined hot coffee, Irish whiskey, brown sugar, and lightly whipped cream.

When one passenger asked if it was Brazilian coffee, Sheridan famously replied:

"No, it's Irish Coffee."

The drink quickly became famous and eventually travelled to the United States, where it gained international recognition.
